LOST..... IN........ (cyber)SPACE.... !!!!!

August 19, 2009 at 6:10 PM

After a couple of hours of intermittent writing, I hit 'post entry' on the blog about my violin accident.  I only turned my back for a second, but when I looked again, it was gone, without a trace.  Snatched away almost before my very eyes. Vanished.

If I can gather the fortitude, I may endeavor to re-group and re-write.  I told Laurie, it's a bit like being asked to head back into the Labor Room for a do-over.  While the final product may perhaps be worth it, it's no fun.

She says, write elsewhere, cut and paste.  Sigh.  I'm listening.  Sigh again.

You have my deep sympathy! But yes, it's best to write it elsewhere and cut and paste.

I had a bad experience writing something in Microsoft Word and cutting and pasting.  All kinds of weird formatting and line spacing showed up.  I'd recommend writing in a plain text writer, and cutting and pasting, if you're going to do that.

Am planning to experiment with Google Docs.

Oh, I feel for you!  I hate it when you nail it, lose it, and after you attempt to rewrite it, it's obvious that you will never have that first impression ever again.

Any time I get to writing something lengthy (which is pretty much all the time as I tend to be long winded), I make it a habit to use two commands peroidically:

ctrl-a
ctrl-c

The first highlights all text in the text field (no matter how much). The second copies it to your clip board. Then if for some crazy reason the internet noms your work, you just ctrl-v to paste in what you had. It's like a baby save. Many a writing-in-progress of mine has been eaten by the interwebz, so I got in the habit of doing that to save myself the rewrites. It's almost reflexive to me to do it now, I don't even think about it :X about once a paragraph or two I find I just automatically start doing it. At the very lease, I do it RIGHT before pressing the 'submit' button just in case. Don't be discouraged though, sometimes take 2 ends up more refined anyway ;)
