It was a nice Christmas. My husband gave me a new chair for my music room. Do most of you stand or sit when you practice? I stand during my lessons, but sit quite a bit when working on pieces at home. I'm not sure if that is a bad thing or not. Anyway, I'm ready to take the holiday stuff down and get it all packed away again. I am determined to go through the boxes and weed out the decorations I no longer use. Having a basement for storage makes it easy to keep waaaay to much stuff.

I played through old books and random pieces today for fun. It was great to play easier stuff and concentrate on bowings and intonation. I am ready to get back to lessons and a more structured game plan for my practicing.

Symphony rehearsals start back next week. We are doing a children's concert - Peter and the Wolf- in February. My children had a recording of the piece and listened to it every night at bedtime for years. They are grown now and think it's neat that Mom will perform a favorite from thier childhoods.

I practice it however I'm going to perform it, so for chamber music and orchestra repertoire I sit, and for solos and everything else, I stand.

I used to sit while practicing, back when I only had a metal stand that I got when didn't get tall enough for an adult. :) Finally I bought a Manhasset and now I stand, which works much better.

I stand until I hit a passage that sounds extraordinarily scary... and then I stand.

I also sit whenever I'm on my 5th hour or so.

I stand while playing all the way through and sit while working out segments. I also practice in front of a mirror- which may sound vain but has proven very helpful :-)
