Trio for two violins and piano

November 3, 2008 at 07:49 PM ·

I'm trying to research what chamber music to do next semester, and I was wondering what types of trios there are for two violins and piano? I've played the Moszkowski Suite before, but really can't think of many pieces for this type of ensemble. Any ideas?

There is some baroque and early classical music for that combination.  Try looking under sheet music at sharmusic.com.

in regards to big name composers who AREN'T from the baroque period and also pieces that are not concertos reduced for your ensemble, I can think of two pieces.

Both Milhaud and Scott wrote sonatas

I think there are a couple of serenades on IMSLP by sinding.

The Milhaud is nice.  There are 3 duets by Shostakovich for violin and piano.

There's always the Sarasate Navarra but I wouldn't recommend diving right into that after a bout with tendonitis. Perhaps a little Spohr first?

There is lots of great music for 2 violins and piano, please check my online collection to see what I have scanned in so far...there are a few from Sibley too...like the Godard duos.

I recently downloaded a Martinu for 2 violins and piano that I think is quite lovely, even though I'm not a huge fan of "modern/contemporary" music.  it is a Sonata for 2 Violins and Piano, H. 213.  Here are iTunes links to samples of the two movements of the Sonata; Allegro Poco Moderato and Andante - Allegro.

Another one to possibly consider is Benda's Trio Sonata in E Major for 2 Violins and Piano.  Here is an iTunes link:

Can't think of any more but I can post a list of works for violin, viola and piano if that helps?  (in case one of you also plays viola?)

There is a nice trio by Arnold Mendelssohn (a son of Felix' cousin), available for free on IMSLP. Moszkowski: suite op.71. For violin, viola & piano: Robert Fuchs, Niels Gade op.42 (also on IMSLP I think). Good luck!

Actually there are a few for 2 violins and piano:

Charles Dancla (1817-1898) French Composer has '3 Petites Symphonies', you can get it from musikvarner in Germany.

Then there's a Sonata by Gluck (1714 - 1787)

Rameau (1683 - 1764) wrote 5 'Concertos' for that combination, the sheet music is published by BMG - both that and the Gluck are available from Durand Salabert in France.

There's a Sonata piece by Hans Huber (1852 - 1921) published by Amadeus Verlag, they also publish a piece by Arnold Mendelssohn (1855 - 1933) for 2 violins and piano.

Adolf Weidig (1868 - 1931) Kleines Trio, published by Merton music

Finally, there is a Canon by Lebeau (1850- 1927), French composer - and it's available from Fufore Verlag in Germany.

There are absolutely heaps for violin, viola and piano but only these few that I can see for two violins and piano.

Hope that helps.

I like this one piece by Milhaud, a violin/piano trio in C Major. I don't know if you're into that style, but it's a piece I've always wanted to play with someone. Its contemporary sound really connects with me. Wish I could find the name of it.

I just saw that it was already metioned, nevermind.

Martinu's Sonata / Sonatina are IMO  good works. And for instance Drdla's (my favorite composer, just because of the name!)"Triumphal March" is also worth a try... And all the already mentioned works...

June 18, 2015 at 10:08 PM · I've recently recorded wonderful and diverse pieces by Swiss/Russian Composer Paul Juon, released by the Label "Musiques Suisses" - a first recording of his complete Work for two Violins and Piano. The CD can be ordered over the following Link:

Paul Juon-Silhouettes and 7 Folk Tune Pieces

These pieces are very well composed - musically and technically interesting, with a wide arrange of expression and techniques, from easy to high level.

I can warmly recommend this repertoire for your programming!

Kind Regards!

June 23, 2015 at 12:01 PM · It's only Baroque, but with my father and a friend I used to play the Purcell Golden Sonata and a trio by Handel (the latter can, I think, also be played by two violins and a cello).

July 5, 2015 at 12:17 AM · I think Michael McLean has some.

July 5, 2015 at 12:37 AM · There is a set by Shostakovich, Five Pieces for Two Violins and Piano. It's kind of elementary, especially the first movement, but the last Polka is lots of fun, and the pieces are short but lovely.
