A friend and I attended the 10th Anniversary Celebration Concert of the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra on Sunday afternoon. "In the fall of 1997, a group of Atlanta musicians met to organize the first permanent period instrument orchestra in the Southeast--the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra. The ABO gave its premiere concert in January 1998, and since then the ABO has grown to be one of the best orchestras of its type in North America." The programming was excellent -Telemann, Bach, and Vivaldi.

It was the first concert of its type I've heard and I was immediately hooked. My brain relates to Baroque music- it's the way I think - methodically. I've been toying with learning to play the viola. I admire its rich, mellow tone and was mesmerized by the ABO violists. I came home and searched for a viola on Ebay and was soooo tempted to bid on one that very night. The seller had posted a YouTube video of himself playing the instrument and I so coveted it. Common sense and an empty checking account prevailed and I've decicded to borrow a friend's old student viola for a trial run. I wonder if this muggle musician can learn to read alto clef. There are several web sites with note reading practice games for different clefs. I played with a few and think I just might be able to do it.

Go for it! I started playing the viola last year. It's funny, I remember as a child I tried to talk one of my friends out of learning the viola in school. At the time it just seemed too big and unwieldy and low and weird. But now I'm finding the viola fits this more mature season of my life.

Isn't that funny how we all respond to one type of music over the other? Would be fun to see that subject in a v.com survey. Me, I'm all Romantic, across the board. Hearing it turns me to butter.
