Does anyone know the name of this violinist?

December 1, 2007 at 10:10 AM

Hi,

I heard there's a violinist who was on 20/20 several years ago because she had to stop playing due to the fact that she cut her finger while cooking. Does anybody remember this story or who the violinist was? Since I'm new to the violin (5 years is new, after all) I don't know who she was but somebody from another violin group told me this story and now I'm really curious.

On another note, to promote the release of my children's book, The Magic Violin, I'm running a little contest this month. I'll be giving away $20 to a lucky winner on Christmas day. This is related to my December virtual book tour. Anyway, I thought I would mention it. Details can be found on my blog.

Thanks in advance!

Best,
Mayra

I think it was Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg. There was an article about her recently in Strings magazine, where I read about it. I'd highly recommend Strings magazine for a violin newcomer. If you order music online from Shar, you might get a discount order card in the packet with your music and be able to get it for $10 for the first year--that's what I did a few months ago, and I'm hooked.

p.s. What age child is your book suitable for? Would it be good for an 8-year-old?

Dear Karen,

Thanks for your tip about Strings. I'll check it out. That's a good offer.

The book is for 5-8 yrs old.

Thanks for pointing out the name of the violinist.

Best,
Mayra

Thanks for the link, Connie. I was a bit familiar with this violinist (by face), but didn't know about her life.

Karen,

I'm intrigued by your bio--you took 7 years off from violin to study neuroscience? That's quite a story! :-)

Connie, I just realized you're the same Connie from the yahoo violin group. I didn't know you had a blog here! LOL

Mayra, I was a neurochemist in a previous life. Many scientists are amateur musicians or music lovers.

Neuroscience is actually what I do for a living. Well, sort of--I don't work at the lab bench anymore, I'm now a project manager. I found neuroscience graduate school too intense to study violin at the same time.

That is so intriguing! I often have my nose stuck in a cosmology/astronomy book! The protagonist of my horror novel is an astrophysicist.

You may want to check out the documentary on Nadia called "Speaking in Strings". It's a must-see for any violinist.

Marsha took the words right out of my mouth. Definitely a must-see.

On the subject of DVDs, I'd also recommend High Fidelity, a documentary that tracks the lives/performances of the Guarneri Quartet. I learned a lot about string quartet players and found the whole documentary to be quite enjoyable. Arnold Steinhardt's Indivisible by Four is on your book list, right? Oh, I guess it's not fiction. But still, I'd call that book a must-read. He is SUCH a good writer.
