Competitors announced in the first Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition
The Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition has chosen 20 competitors for its inaugural competition Jan. 22-Feb. 5 in Boca Raton, Fl.
The competitors, chosen from more than 80 applicants from 16 countries, include:

- Wonhee Bae, 29, of South Korea
- Aaron Chan, 20, of Hong Kong
- Brian Kwan Yeung Choi, 22, of China
- Sirena Huang, 22, of the United States
- Ho-Hsuan Feng, 21, of Taiwan
- Luke Hsu, 26, of the United States
- Ari Isaacman-Beck, 31 of the United States
- Alina Ming Kobialka, 19, of the United States
- Erzhan Kulibaev, 30, of Kazakhstan
- Li Lao, 29, of China
- Jiyoon Lee, 24, of South Korea
- Quanshuai Li, 25, of China
- Christine Seohyun Lim, 22, of the United States/South Korea
- Max Yiming Mao, 22, of China
- Dongfang Ouyang, 26, of China
- Ji Won Song, 23, of South Korea
- Elly Suh, 27, United States/South Korea
- Chiharu Taki, 29, of Japan
- Hannah Tarley, 25, of the United States
"We could not be more pleased with the response to our inaugural competition, and the level of artistry was absolutely remarkable," said Elmar Oliveira, Founder and Artistic Director of the competition. "We look forward to meeting each and every competitor and are eager to help build a foundation for their success."
The 20 competitors range in ages 19-31 and represent eight countries: Norway, South Korea, Hong Kong, China, United States, Kazakhstan, Taiwan and Japan. Prizes include a First Prize of $30,000, Second Prize of $15,000 and Third Prize of $10,000. The first prize winner will also receive performance opportunities and career support in the areas of management and public relations.
The competition will take place at Lynn University, where Oliveira is a professor of violin at Lynn Conservatory of Music. Jury members for the competition include Andrés Cárdenes, Charles Castleman, Alexander Gilman, Gudny Gudmundsdottir, Daniel Heifetz (Chairman of the Jury), Ilya Kaler and Vera Tsu Wei-ling. Winners will be chosen through an intensive four-step process, beginning with an online submission and culminating in two final performances.

Seems fairly equal, so that's nice. Some recent competitions have had overwhelmingly female competitors. I am glad this one attracted competitors of both genders!
