Mississippi Pizza?

December 25, 2005 at 6:11 AM

So I'm practicing rhythms with my daughter this evening, and we're working on that classic Suzuki pattern for "Twinkle," four 16ths followed by two 8ths (or is it four 8ths followed by two quarters?). Anyway, I remember learning "pepperoni pizza" as the chant for the rhythm, but I've heard other teachers say "Mississippi Hot Dog". So I start chanting that while clapping with my daughter, and she interrupts me, "No, Crissa [her teacher] always says 'Mississippi Stop Stop'!"

This makes little sense to me, so I respond, "Well, ok. Mommy learned 'pepperoni pizza', or you can say "Mississippi Stop Stop' like Crissa, or you can say "Mississippi Hot Dog'. Which do you want to use?"

"Mississippi Pizza!"

Haha! Little kids are a riot! Reminds me of my little sis.... Enjoy them while they are still cute and not annoying (although that is spoken from a sister perspective ; ).

I got 4 JB CDs last night and Hahn's Barber CD.

I thank you and your daughter for ways to learn that rhythm. I have a student who doesn't like pizza so I'll try Mississippi Hot Dog. Merry Xmas.

Sydney, which ones did you get? I didn't get any even though I have a bunch on my Amazon.com wish list. But that's ok, I'll buy them for myself eventually. :)

I got (here, I'll bullet it out):
-The Kreisler album
-Brahms, Paganini, Sarasate, Wieniawski, etc.
-Saint-Saens and Lalo Concertos
- The Virtuoso Showpieces (Zigeunerweisen, Poeme...)

Which is your favorite of these? Well, actually Josh Bell overload (JK), but how should I systematically go about listening to these? I don't want to plunge into all of these at once. Help!

Those are the 2-for-1s, right? Well, I'm listening to the Showpieces a lot now, because I'm working on the Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, and I love Bell's rendition. The Kreisler Album is also fantastic.

Hah, I remember those rhythms except since I'm in Britain instead of "Mississippi hotdog" it was "Picadilly Circus" in London

Our first suzuki teacher used "Charlie Brown and Snoopy" for the first rhythm. The others were "Run pony, run pony," "Ice cream-- shhh! --cone," and "Alligator, alligator."

Wow, thanks for the comments, everyone. I didn't know there were so many variations! (love "Piccadilly Circus")
