PART 4 Why are these rare violinconcerto's never been played or seldom recorded?Dear Mr. Heemskerk,
Your enthusiasm for non-standard repertoire is wonderful. As you know, there are a few violinists who explore this repertoire. Please remember that the modern violin technique uses synthetic strings ( not gut strings). The result is a very heavy, aggressive style of playing. The gut strings are more sensitive to sensitive nuance. Listen to the range of emotion and nuance in the sound of Jascha Heifetz. His sound is a kalaidescope of tonal color. The gut strings ( unwound gut) he used help express these colors! He used a pure gut "A" string, and a pure gut "D" string. I suggest that you try these strings on your violin. Milstein and Rosand used a pure gut "A" string. If you are interested, I can recommend some strings, and also the measurements of the strings.
My first violin teacher studied at the Berlin Hochschule when Joachim wasc the director. I think he heard Joachim perform the Hungarian Concerto. If it was not Joachim, then it was played by Halir. I do not remember exactly what my teacher said- it was a very long time ago. My teacher also heard Sarasate play in Berlin. He talked about Sarasate many times. I think he prefered the violin playing of Sarasate and not the German style.
Let me recommend a wonderful book about violin concerti. Try to buy this book- it lists more than 6,000 violin concerti."CONCERTOS FOR VIOLIN AND VIOLA" by Burnett R. Toskey.
There are other concereti that I have played. They are great works. One is Concerto Number 2 ( "On Indian Themes") by the American violinist-composer Cecil Burleigh. Leopold Auer said that the Bureigh concerto is the best concerto written by an American. I have played it in concert with piano, and also with orchestra. I recommend it highly.
Another concerto that is unknown is "Allegro Dramatique" by Antonio Bazzini. This piece is about 13 minutes in length. I played it with piano. I have the orchestra parts. Bazzini was the composition teacher of Puccini. Everyone knows his famous piece "La Ronde de Lutins". Bazzini was a fine composer. The Allegro Dramatique sounds like the music of Verdi circa Aida.
If you are interested, I will play one of these "special" violin concertos in Holland. Do you think any of your amateur orchestras are interested?
You can repair your broken bow. Is it an expensive bow?Keep in touch.
