What do you do with your old violin when you upgrade?

October 15, 2008 at 11:34 PM

I am interesting in trying out the Jay Haide L'anncience violin but was wondering when you guys upgrade, what do you do with your old violin? Do you sell it to the violin shop? craigslist or ebay?? I currently have a student violin by Gliga, i love it, but would love to look into a better one since I've been progressing fast (a reward for myself!!)

If you love it, keep it. When you love an instrument, it becomes part of you. There are many times to use your #2 instrument -- when you're traveling, playing outdoors, waiting to get your #1 violin back from the luthier, etc.

and...you can also donate your retired violin to a needy school program or a needy music student who can't afford an instrument.

Keep it. It is good for traveling or other circumstances where you don't want to risk your better violin (outdoor concerts). It is good to have a backup if you need to leave in in the shop for awhile, but many shops will give you a "loaner".

My old student viola still gets alot of use. Mostly on overseas travel. Sometimes even, some of my violinist/violist friends will play it if we want to do a quintet.
