HEADS UP...$TRING PRICE$ ON THE RISE???

June 12, 2009 at 10:51 AM

I'm not sure if this is an omen, but yesterday I received the "new" 2009-2010 catalog from a string supply dealer (rhymes with Cosmopolitan)...VIOLIN $TRING$ HAVE GONE UP IN PRICE an average of $25-$30 per set. Now, I only looked at Eudoxas. Olivs, Evahs, and Obligatos but this is surely a steep increase. I do not purchase my strings from this company because they are always a bit higher than Shar and others, but this has me thinking....time to stock up!!!

The problem is the weak dollar.... the dollar devalued 16% here just this year, and most strings, wood, pegs, varnish materials, tools etc. comes from Europe and are paid in strong Euro.

I remember when I could get a Dominant violin set with a Jargar E for 18 dollars... those were good days.

well if I can avoid paying almost  eighty for Eudoxas and well over one hundred for Olivs, I'm stocking up before the hoarders get to them....heck might as well  get strings for the students too. Bad enough now when Mommy moans because a string broke and she might have to lose out on a Starbuck's mocha madness...

there goes the piggy bank...Kaplans, Corellis, Reds as well. I now need a stimulus package myself

Luis, yup that's about right...let's hope that's where the prices stay...The catalog I mentioned has now listed them  for: Eudoxas at  $76 and Olivs at $106...YIKES

String making may envolve high technology, tradition, specialized workers and costy materials, perhaps that's why the Chinese are still  unable to make  cheap and decent strings...
