Summer Goals, Violin Style.
May 27, 2010 at 11:52 PM
This summer is looking to be quite interesting for me. I'm graduating high school, going to Disney World soon after, and in August will be heading off to Shenandoah University as either a music ed. or performance major. In between doesn't look quite as glamorous... working? Practicing? (No money for a summer festival.... again.) Despite this, I have a few violin-related goals I'd like to share with you. I hope to get most of these things accomplished before school starts.
- Work diligently on Kreutzer etudes. Currently, I'm working on 31.
- Learn more solo Bach. I'll probably stick with movements from partitas 2 and 3.
- Work on three octave scales EVERY DAY. No matter what. (Lofty, but useful.)
- Perform at church like no one's business. Virtual sheet music is a God-send. (Pun intended?) Rachmaninov Vocalise, an arrangement of Moonlight Sonata, Solo Bach, Handel sonata movements? Who knows what I'll feel like playing.
- Coinciding with the last one, I plan to play the first movement of Beethoven's Spring Sonata in church as late as I can before I go away to school. I have performed so many times in church it's not funny and the seriously love everything I do, whether or not I'm happy with the performance.
Lazy days of summer my arse. :) I'll update you if I remember.

Dude,
As far as not having money for festivals, you do know that there are a few free ones, right? I mean, they are very hard to get into because everyone applies, but keep that in mind for next year. Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, CA; Texas Music Festival in Houston (if I'm not mistaken); and the Youth Orchestra of the Americas summer tours, which is what I'm doing this summer :-) So don't let the money situation discourage you!

Don't forget the part about stretching out on the ground, looking up at the sun and saying, "Ahhhh." ; )
Congrats on the graduation and have a productive (but happy) summer!

Wow, you must really like the violin! But I still think you should have taken my advice... The fact that you couldn't come up with any way to reply to my last comment did not go unnoticed
