The V.com convention?

March 18, 2010 at 8:47 PM

Just a stray thought.  What if we (here on v.com)  organized a convention?  It seems so strange to me that I know so much about you guys and have never seen any of you face to face.

It wouldn't have to be anything large, but maybe in CA since that's where our fearless leader, Laurie is?  Maybe we could organize master classes, performances, and various other violin-esque activities.  Contact Shar and other companies of that type to have a host of products available for trials and purchase (like instruments, SRs and CRs?)

We could even host the first public, face-to-face Shoulder Rest Debate?

What do you guys think?  Yes or no?

The idea has been raised before; I just have never been able to get beyond "Where would we do this? When? How?"

Well maybe if we just started out small and said :

"Listen we're meeting here at this location and this this and this is going on.  If you can make it great, if you can't too bad."

Maybe it could even start as just a whole bunch of us getting together at violin shop willing to put up with us and seeing/playing a few concerts.

Michael, since not everyone can fly to CA maybe each member interested should name their city and v.commers could make small conventions in the city where they can go. Exemple the Montreal people together at Montreal, the Boston people together at Boston etc.

I don't know if it's realistic or not though ; )

But warning... those who will meet will have to webcam themselves playing together and send it on here for the others!

Just kidding!!! This would scare to many people!

um, not sure about the whole convention thing.......
but I hope you realize that you aren't the only MD-er here.  so I know that you were just BS-ing about the whole "not being able to get all state music because of photocopy rights of the publishers" :)  remember?  "its public domain"

anyways...  i don't want to burst your bubble, but MD is a pretty small state, and this year they took 60/100 violin players for all state..  if it took you until 12th grade to make it, then i hope that you are sure you really really want to make a living playing the violin... you have to be prepared to be competitive forever.  there are some really good players who weren't even close to being successful.  i think i am being smart by staying away from the whole thing :D

however, good luck.

OK really people?  Get over yourselves.  All-State has come and gone.  I got the music in enough time.  Eric, please go to IMSLP and look up Shostakovich.  Or you know what, let me post a link for you to follow if you are so inclined.  What about the piece by Yuzo Toyama where the parts cost $300 to replace which is why we played off of PHOTOCOPIES? OR the piece "Memorial to Lidice" which only gets a small mention on IMSLP?     I found the music for the Rimsky-Korsakov in time, because you know, some people actually were helpful and told me I could find it on IMSLP.  SO, in closing only one piece was "public domain".

OK thanks.  I don't even care if you read this rant but, thanks for contributing to my idea for a convention.

And plus, I like Ann-Marie's idea.  Mini conventions! haha.

hm... i wasn't trying to criticize you for not getting music on time haha, i just thought it was funny that you made up stuff just to put yourself in a better light for people u'll never even meet.  it's also cool how i can contradict u now.

for example, you said that they had to get photocopy rights of the publishers for two of the pieces.  you probably just made this up on the spot, and it looks like you just proved it was three, not two.  Didn't the manager explain that the toyama he photocopied illegally, that they were in the room, and that he has to destroy them so no one will ever know he did it?  Yup, sounds like we definitely got permission from the publishers.  Hm... we played off PHOTOCOPIES for the toyama..... i wondered what we played off of for the rest of the pieces :)

Oh, and my comment was a response to the post where you asked whether you should become a professional musician.  hope that you think about it more realistically now.. i personally think it'd be a miserable miserable life.. u should just play for fun!

oh, and just because something isn't on whatever that web site you linked me to is, doesn't mean it isn't public domain, right?

Michael,

I think the convention idea is wonderful and thanks for volunteering to be its host.  We could all play some Opus 36

I like this idea...also, don't let anyone tell you that All-State is a good measure of future musical success.  You won't know about you journey in music until the end.

Opus 36, Sam? Clementi? But that's piano music! Seriously, whose Op. 36 are you referring to?

OPUS 36?

Bart, you must follow Michael's All State exodus to gain this answer

As Laurie said, we've discussed this  a lot in the past.  I think the consensus was to hold several mini-conventions in different parts of the U.S.  However, we never got down to the serious work of planning.
