the gig report

December 10, 2008 at 2:58 AM

Lessons from tonight's rehearsal:

I really hate that southbound stretch of I-75 that is under permanent construction.  Big ol' trucks; lane shifts; orange barrels; concrete walls for 5 miles. Blech.

The second violinist wins.  I cannot possibly play any louder. Do not ask me to play louder.   Note to self: "I will not crunch...I will not  crunch...I will not crunch...oops.  Did I say that out loud?

You will have balance problems with 5 strings, 2 trumpets, and organ, and an oboe.

Buzz Saw oratorio.  Oh, wait.  I am sorry.  That was the Messiah I just rehearsed.

Well, at least there are X-mas gigs this year...

Next year might not be so busy...

Bleh.

After Jard van Nes, a great Dutch singer, had performed with a rather loud orchestra, she was asked how she managed to make herself heard. "I don't compete", she said.

I loved that response. In relation to trumpets and trucks it is important to know one's place.

Our Messiah has 6 firsts, 8 seconds, about 8 violas, about 10 cellos, and a 90-member chorus.  We're getting a good lesson in "con ripieno" and "senza ripieno."
