What to play next

March 5, 2006 at 2:54 AM

So, with seating auditions for camp fast approching, I am in search of a fun piece to use. Since they only want 1 piece, it should show both technical and the 'emotional' side of the violin. And have an ASTA grade of 4-5ish.

Thanks for any ideas.

If you want to try the Saint-Saëns' Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso, we could compare notes. :) Also, Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen is rated ASTA Grade 5, though that appears rather hard to me. :-0

Honestly till about 2 (?) months ago, I'd never heard of Zigeunerweisen... now it seems to be all (well not quite) anyone talks about...

Since I am already in the camp, I won't need to know the piece till mid June.

What is an ASTA rating? How would one find their own?

If you go to the Shar Music site, a lot of the entries in the Sheet Music catalog list the ASTA (American String Teachers Association) ratings. You can also buy an ASTA syllabus, which runs about $30, I think.

Hey Jessica, if you get Joshua Bell's "Violin Showpieces" CD (in the Decca reissues, it's paired w/the Saint-Saëns No. 3 & Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole), you get the Intro & Rondo Capriccioso on track 1 and Zigeunerweisen on track 3 :)

Hahaha Karin! ^_^
It's seriously a good set of CDs, though, I got it for Christmas.

Did Jim actually say something unsarcastically?! WOW!

xD I think you can all thank the evil powers for bringing up the Zigeunerfsdkgfslsjfdn and bad spelling.

Thaks for all the input.

And, Karin, I may just have to pick up that CD.
