Guide to Choosing a Violin Case

August 11, 2010 21:30

I've decided to blog about choosing the right violin case and reviews on some popular cases.

Let me first say that I have found that all decent cases with suspension protect your violin very well, so that shouldn't be too much of an issue when choosing a case. It is important to remember that, as Mike Gordge believed, it is the job of the holder to protect the violin, not the case. So if you're not throwing your violin down the stairs, any good supension case will do. Here are a few popular names:

Bobelock: Heavy, not too attractive, very durable, great craftsmanship, relatively cheap

Gewa: Good weight, very durable, not always the best materials used, relatively cheap

Negri: Good weight, very durable, great insulation, decent craftsmanship (not as good as some competitors), attractive design, a little pricier

Musafia: Many light weight options, Lifetime Warranty, extremely durable, very attractive, unsurpassed craftsmanship, many protective features and options, very expensive

Bam: Some love them, some hate them. Very light, expensive

Concord: Good weight, attractive design, good craftsmanship, durability varies, relatively cheap

Lesser-known brands: If your're just looking for good protection, you can get a very good suspension case very cheaply

As far as shaped VS oblong, that's personal opinion.

Hope this helps!
