Does America have a Tin Ear?

August 11, 2007 at 5:33 PM

What do you think of the mixture of electronic playback with the electric violin? Suddenly, I see the violin is on equal footing with the piano, or even exceeding it.

The hip and beatnicks are tearing into a new source of excitement and perhaps a new modern era (YouTube Documented).

Musically Speaking, saddest of all, looking about no new furrows are being plowed by our old establishments.

'Merica don't have no tin ear. Besides if we did, it would become the world's new gold ear in about 24 hrs. Our beatniks are sharp. I trust 'em. So knock it off.

Jim,

I said the beats were leading the way; so, knock what off?

My definition of "tin ear" is - rap music and loud electric guitars. If the hipsters start blaring their violin music, I would not listen to that either and this is where their music may go.

What I find superior in the new record and play back of the associated equipment of the electric violin is the ability to record the theme music and the background and I can't imagine Juilliard not jumping all over that feature.

I wouldn't let a student in if they could present a good buskin combo. In a tight market, I would want the majority of my students to compose and play.

Have you seen what you have to know before you walk into MIT or the Colorado School of Mines?
