Who is your favourite Celtic fiddle player ?
Irish fiddler, Paddy Glackin. On the CD, The Touch of the Masters Hand, (a compilation of poems and music taken RTE Sunday morning radio shows) he plays a really haunting lament called Port na bPucai. It follows a poem about a fiddler in the windswept and isolated Blasket Islands, and sounds supernatural.
Hmm, I'd have to say it's a tough call between Alasdair Fraser and Natalie MacMaster. Both have great qualities and are fun to listen to.
I'd say it's a tough call between Alasdair Fraser and Bonnie Rideout. Aly Bain is awfully good, too.

Colyn Fischer
Dr. John Turner
Anna Wendy Stevenson
Melinda Crawford
Pete Clark
Irish:
Paddy Canny
Mairead ni Mhaoinigh
Tommy Peoples
Patrick Ourceau
Oisin Mac Diarmada
Alasdair Fraser is my favorite. He inspired me at the beginning of my "celtic phase" which continues to this day.
Martin Hayes, Sean Keane, Andy McGann all come to mind. There are so many great ones. I like Eileen Ivers when she's doing it old style.
Yes, I forgot about Martin Hayes. He ties with Alasdair. Also he is sort of a cool guy. I sat in a master class with him once.
Neat to see all these votes for Alasdair Fraser . . . I'm actually going to see him and Natalie Haas in concert later this month. I'm sooo excited.
Michael,
Must have been a thrill to study w/Martin Hayes!
He also had classes this year at Willie Clancy School in Ireland.
Kevin Burke is excellent as well !
Kevin Burke's playing is too smooth for my taste. It lacks emphasis/bounce/drive. I've been fortunate enough to take a whole week of classes with Bonnie Rideout at a summer camp a few years ago and one class with Alasdair (see my blog dated March 21, 2005).
K. burkes style is flowing now, but check out his Bothy Band era...very great stuff!!!
I still like his playing..Martin Hayes, too...very smooth style these days, but he does play with the Tullah Ceili Band, which again is great stuff!
I really just sat in on one class with Martin. I wish I could have studied more with him. That short session made a lasting impression, though. He is truly a master at what he does.
Martin Hayes has not lost his roots to Irish trad music even though he performs many of his own, original compositions.
He has trad Irish in his soul, always.
Ashley McIsaac. When I visited SanFransisco, Tower records played his cd. I immediately bought it... :)
