According to Hugh Bean, ‘If an alien wanted to know what a violin sounded like, he’d play Milstein’s recording of the Goldmark Concerto’.
Robert Maxham, reviewing the new Campoli/Katin CD in Fanfare Magazine, has just proposed it as an alternative
In the review he writes, ‘Campoli produced a wealth of nuances in the first movement of Mozart’s Sonata, and I’ve never heard his fabled tone (nor perhaps anyone else’s) in such vivid fidelity; a similar lushness characterizes the piano’s tone as well’.
The CD, subject of the review, is the Campoli/Katin CD3/2009 from Orchestral Concert CDs:
MOZART Violin Sonata in A, K 526. BEETHOVEN Violin Sonata No. 2. Recorded during a live, lunchtime recital in the Fairfield Halls Croydon on the 26th September 1963. On the same CD, BRAHMS Violin Sonata No. 3, recorded in Campoli’s home in 1973.
Maxham goes on to say that, ‘This issue deserves to be a part of most collections’.
Since Alfredo’s death, on the 27th March 1991, for some obscure reason his unique contribution to the violin repertoire has been allowed to slowly fade, robbing those, who have never heard his famed ‘Bel Canto’ sound.
