Flurries expected next week, accompanied by bass, accordion and fiddle.

Everyone around here is getting psyched for the annual Dance Flurry in Saratoga in a week and a half -- the best folk music, the best participatory dancing, the best sing-alongs, fabulous performers, local and distant, all having a marvelous time.

My band is playing twice in official ways over the weekend, accompanying beginner contradances. Last year we only played once, so I guess they liked us. :) It's largely by lottery, though, I think, so it's the luck of the draw as to whether we get picked. Bands love to play there because the pay is okay, but you get a free pass to the whole weekend and you get good exposure. Really, just the free pass is a good enough incentive!

Don't know if anyone else around here would be coming, but if you love folk music and/or any kind of dancing (ballroom and folk, mostly), then this festival is for you. If you'll be there, give me a shout and we'll have to meet!

Patty, I *love* going to folk festivals. I prefer playing music to dancing or singing. I get very little sleep at festivals, but I have lots of fun. Maybe we can meet at a festival some time.

I could try to entice you by saying that this is a great festival to come to... :) Everywhere you go, there are musicians just jamming in the corridors, on the couches, in every open space where they haven't been chased out of. As soon as you walk out of one circle of music, you're in the next! You don't even need to attend any of the workshops, though there are some fabulous ones on fiddle styles, bowing, songs and stories, etc. And when you get too tired to hold your bow, there are performances.

C'mon, Pauline, you've got a whole week left to make plans! ;)

Patty, it sounds almost like heaven on earth. Is there something like that up north during spring, summer, or fall? I've got asthma, and I can't breathe when it's cold out. Otherwise, I'd be packing now.
