Mutes which one ?

December 26, 2009 at 3:48 PM

As a new player I am thinking about getting a mute and I am confused on the best one to get  with all that are available metel, rubber, full bridge single string has my head swimming.

Also how much to use it ?

generally speaking the `Tourte@ model is perfectly fine.  I perosnally avoid the Menuhin mute which is a tight metal clip and plastic tube thta rolls int the bridge.

You only use a mute when the music is marked `con sordino`

I use the Spector mute.  It is very convenient.  I agree with Buri that you should avoid the Menuhin.

Besides de Tourte one, which is really nice, I have also a study metal mute. It covers the whole bridge and is really usefull for night practices, avoidance of neighbour's complaints, and general peace keeping. Be carefull not to drop it over the violin, it could scratch the varnish.

Happy new Year!

TOURTE OR HEIFITZ...I also like many others (boxwood, leather), but when in need it's nice to know it's already on the fiddle and not in my pocket "somewhere"
