Buying a violin

November 7, 2006 at 9:08 PM

What would one pay to get an intermediate violin. This should include the price of intermediate player's strings.
If what you have entered is reasonalbe, where would I get it?

Shar has great intermediate violins... you would expect to pay about $800-$1500 there...

I'm not too sure, but if the price range is somewhere between $800-1500, then I would also suggest checking out Stringworks.com and maybe TheStringHouse.com. I bought some nice student violins from the latter for my kids and myself through teacher's recommendation, but Stringworks does seem quite popular and seem to offer good instruments at great values -- a friend of mine (and at least one other violinist.com blogger) has their Kallo Bartok violin, which might suit you (or you might consider their Michael Todd II).

Both places I suggested offer pretty good trade-in policies in case you want to upgrade w/ them in the future though Stringworks has less to offer in terms of future upgrades than The String House since they generally only deal w/ newly made instruments (and only has 1 more model above the Kallo Bartok).

Wow I forgot about the string house... I live like 20 minutes from there and I have been there, it is great. I suggest it also. String house might be a little out of your price range for an intermidiate violin, seeing that they mostly deal with fine violins from the 1700, 1800, and 1900's. But they do have some good beginner models.

I'd say 5 to 7k
