My Violin May Need Work

December 14, 2008 at 1:25 AM

Looks like my poor violin may need a bit of work.

I've been saying to my coach.teacher that my violin doesn't sound quite right to my ears. Regrettably  she concurred saying it sounds a little nasally.

Off to the luthier it went this afternoon.
The luthier moved the sound peg saying it was WAY too tight and offered to take it for a day or to to "fiddle" (sorry) with it.

Her first thoughts we're the back and belly are a bit to thick but before any scraping and redefining the dimensions occurred, she wanted to fool around with the sound post first.

Dang...

Hopefully, between adjusting the soundpost and maybe trying some different strings, you can get a sound you like.  Scraping around, like any sort of surgery, can produce unanticipated, irreversible consequences.  I would want to avoid that if possible.  Also, depending on the value of the instrument and the cost of "scraping", you might want to consider the alternative of getting another instrument.  Just my $0.02.

Thanks  Tom!

I'm certainlt hoping moving the sound post and mebbe getting way from my Thomastiks will bring the sound around a little closer to what I think it should be.

Reworking the geometry of my instrument is really a last choice. I'd almost wanna' trade it away as is before I tried something like that.

My violin was really only $1300. Quite a sum for us byers but in the violin world, really it's nothing as you know. Still I like it though...

Well, tomorrow we'll see what my trusted luthier has done!!

Well, I got my violin back yesterday and I must say it's improved. To the point that I'm totally satisfied? Nope.

Perhaps it's time for a switch in instruments.
