Names of violins part 2

February 17, 2008 20:52

I think I've hit on a name for my violin at last! It's Katinka. My sister has a friend from Germany named Katinka. I think it's a cool name. It gives me conotations of tinkering, which sort of fits the idea of fiddling and practicing. I like it anyway- I'm currently on a little trip visiting my sister, so I can't wait to get back home a fiddle on Katinka! :)

Naming your instrument

February 7, 2008 08:20

Lately, I've been trying to think of a good name to christen my violin with. I've gone through flowers, female composers, and even names in favorite books. I haven't thought of anything yet. Does anyone have good ideas? What do you name your instrument? I heard once that Yo-Yo Ma's cello was named Petunia when a student sugggested it. Has a nice ring to it...

Weather and Violins

February 6, 2008 19:14

Has anyone ever noticed how different your violin can sound when the weather is different? It was raining today, and my violin had a much richer tone. The sound was terrific when I played the 'Meditation from Thais'. And generally, when it is hot out, my violin has a wolfy tone. Is this common with anyone else?

Thoughts keeping me up far too late

February 5, 2008 20:53

I had a good violin lesson today. We worked more on the Bruch Concerto, and I also got new music! Hooray! It is the 'Meditation from Thais.' I can't wait to sink my teeth in it. I have a beautiful recording of it by Joshua Bell, and I always find that I appreciate a piece more when I actually work on it myself. I get to know the intricacies of it, and it gives me that much more respect to those who can play it really well. I think that is one drawback to playing things effortlessly; hardly any one realizes how much work it actually is.

Pinky Problems

February 1, 2008 15:32

Hi, lately I've been having fourth finger troubles, and I wondered if anyone can give me some suggestions on how to fix it. My problem is that my fourth finger isn't curving correctly; only the last joint of the finger is bent when I place it on the fingerboard. So basically, my finger looks like an "L" when it should look like a "C". I talked with my teacher, and the only suggestion she could offer is simply to train it not to do that, but it is much harder said than done. If anyone has any suggestions as to why this is happening, and/or how to fix it, please let me know! Thanks.
