I am a fan of total package musicians who have fantastic techniques and impeccable musicianship and above all restraint and taste.
My favorite is Katica Illenyi. Here are a few of my favorites:
She plays in a huge variety of styles:
She plays virtuoso licks with ease (and she sings)
She plays old favorites:
She dances:
She plays the theremin:
And she comes from a family of virtuoso musicians:
Here she is with her two brothers and sister:
She is the total package of talent, hard work, character, charm, etc. She is definitely someone aspiring popular musicians should look up to.

In a slightly different style I once saw a violin and accordion duo at the Edinburgh festival (fringe!). The accordianist was good but the violinist was outstanding. She dispatched Zigeunerweisen as effortlessly as this lady dealt with Carmen, as well as various popular classics and not-classics - I forget exactly what they played. Turned out that she had once played professionally in a string quartet, but just preferred doing what she did.. I agree it's good to see such terrific talent in unlikely places. Some of the C&W players are pretty good too.....
