In my experience (I've been on 1 hour flights and 18 hour flights), I didn't have to do anything to the instrument in order for it to be safe during flights. As long as you bring it on board and put it in the overhead compartment, it will be fine.

Best,

J

Don't loosen your strings and remove the bridge unless you are ready to go to a luthier at your destination to have the sound post re-set because it could fall.  Do remember to loosen your bow though.  It also helps to get in line early during boarding to ensure a spot in the overhead bin for your violin (You really don't want the flight attendants to handle your instrument).

Thanks to Jared and Joyce here, I think I know what to do with my violin when in the flight...

All is fine unless the flight attendants insist your instrument has to go in the hold. Have started to only use  my flattest suspension case; sofar no problems keeping it in the cabin. If  your violin ends up in the hold, you may be better off taking you bridge down even if you have to get your soundpost set up again; also use extra cushioning material. Luggage handlers throw your stuff around.
