Note to self

April 7, 2007 at 7:27 AM

Carprice No. 4, Dancla
F# minor is not that bad. Just remember not to get too flat on E#. Practice with slurs to work on intonation.

Sarabanda, Bach
Don't forget not to squeeze or choke the tone. Just let it go and let the violin ring.

Giga, Bach
Good progress. Make sure not to loose the bow grip. Don't rush. Shape the lines.

Romance in F, Beethoven
Use more bow. Smooth bow change. Join the melodic lines. Don't play forte with pressure on the bow but more towards the bridge and/or faster bow speed instead. Check intonation in the minor episodes. Don't rush. It's a romance for Pete's sake.

Spanish Songs, Falla
Ask Buri how to play upward piziccato in Jota. Continue experimenting. Perhaps pluck lower at the fingerboard because the angle between the strings are smaller and easier to pluck 4 strings???

Scales and technical works
Did you practise at all? Well, get on it then! Make sure to place the tumb in a position that will facilitate the stretch in 10th.

Theory
Cadences: Perfect, Plagal, Interrupted and a couple of Imperfect ones. Double the bass for all chords except VI, which is better to double the third. In minor keys, make sure the leading note is raised to tonic in the next chord.

Invervals: Perfect, Major, Minor, Augmented, Diminished. Inverted perfect remains perfect, others become the opposite. Major becomes minor, augmented becomes diminished, vice versa.

Cello
Spend a bit more time on the cello. It will help with the octaves on the violin, not to mention stronger 4th finger and easier 4th finger vibrato.

Make sure to let the left arm pull down towards the fingerboard on the cello to get the weight. don't just press with the fingers. This will free the thumb from squeezing the neck.

Others
Make sure to take a break once in a while. You are a full time accountant, not a full time music student. Don't exhaust yourself and get sick. Don't give yourself excuse to skip theory exam!
