Composit Bow Tension

May 16, 2007 at 8:44 PM

When I first start out in the morning with violin practice, my bow flutters (gets the shakes up and down). So, I tighten it and that seems to help. But, I wonder what tension am I supposed to keep (Glasser)?

Also, I hate the string hiss and stutters I get with a flat bow stroke in first position, which is all I am supposed to be practicing for now. I get flustered and rock my bow usually over on the right edge looking down on it. Is that a good practice?

My Dominant strings came with the violin and I believe they are quite old. This is a Gotz violin from Germany with deep lows and ho-hum highs. What strings should I choose; I am thinking Obligato.

My note reading is coming along very well and I have brought new material to a halt and just practice the first six to eight lessons and have slowed down to a crawl and now I'm starting speed up a little and work on timing, phrasing and getting good intonation (week eight).

Thanks Scott! How long have you played and what strings do you use?

I just ordered Evah's with a Pirastro Gold separate E. East to West is usually a week to ten days - Johnsonstring.com $56 with shipping - E-Bay bid. They mix right off their low price on E-Bay which surprised me. Very nice on the phone with questions.

Got into a big hassel with teach when I told her my left position was slipping when I went from Low A to High E. When she finally stopped saying,"don't slip" when I was telling her I heard incorrect intonation and corrected it."

We then had a "breakthrough" moment as she discovered I didn't have my left shoulder under my violin and my elbow on my side. She really worked hard to get my grip right, how to establish home plate so to speak, and get my fingers coming straight down on the strings for my palm and finger length, which are a ton longer than her's.

I'm just getting my bow hold halfway right and not pushing with my arm. This week's practice will be a snail pace as I have six things to watch.

As a kid I grew up on the 12th green of the Glenn Garden Golf course in Ft. Worth where Hogan, Snead and Nelson turned pro and were still members. There, I learned that golf fell apart with one finger out of place, now I'm getting the same thing with the violin.
