Re - performance screw ups

September 27, 2005 at 11:05 PM

Just a quick entry - I saw Beethovens Vc performed by a professional orchestra and soloist this weekend. What a fantastic orchestra. It's a shame the soloist absolutely murdered the Beethoven. I have grade 1 students who can play more in tune! Even the second violins were grimacing! He also messed up some string crossings in the last movement. Also he chose the most hair-brained fingering for the theme of the finale sul g - 4,1,4, shift 2(F#),4(A)
,which he played flat more often than not. Surely any sane person would do 4,1 shift 1(D),3(F#),4. Or am I crazy and this person is getting paid for a complete hack-job?! Grrr. Even the adagio was out of tune. It wasnt a famous soloist by the way. I live in England, what do you expect! Honestly, it left me bewildered.

There is a reason why I am very careful about who I go hear play my favorite concerti. I waited years to go see the Beethoven and went my first and only time to see Perlman. I would have gone to see Hahn do it a couple of years earlier if I had not had a conflict. There is a lesson here.

Hey at least she would have played it in tune.

My condolences for your traumatic concert experience. I do want to mention, however, that the 4-1-4-2-4 fingering for the Beethoven third movement is considered very "classical" and "square" and eliminates any tasteless slides between the 1-1 fingering, so if you have really accurate aim, it can be a legitimate fingering. That said, I agree with you and much prefer 4-1-1-3-4. Hope you're recovering speedily!
