After having her right arm in a cast for two weeks, my daughter went back to the doctor to have it removed for x-rays and examined again to see if it was broken.
Both my daughter and I had discussed prior to this visit that if it was healed that she would continue to wear a brace or wrap to further protect it until it felt "really good."
I could tell by the look on the doctor's face the news wasn't good. He said that in the initial evaluation they couldn't tell for sure if it had broken, but after the x-ray they could tell by the scar tissue that she had broken the radius bone next to her growth plate. Another cast would have to be put on for another 3 weeks.
Solo and ensemble contest is this weekend along with auditions for chairs for her youth orchestra. She has decided to go ahead with both and is hoping for the best chair that she can get in her orchestra. She told me that she has figured out how to play spiccato?? bowings. From what I can hear in the practice room it sounds pretty good; she just can't play fast.
I did promise her (many months ago) that we would go see Hilary Hahn when she comes to Indianapolis in a couple of weeks. As they placed the second cast on, she asked me "Hey, Can Hilary sign my cast?"..
I can't tell you what will happen over the next few weeks while waiting for healing. But I will tell you that this in no way has slowed her down.
nowhere to go but up, jodi! cheer up! your kid has learnt a lot from this experience!
I'm sure Hilary Hahn will sign her cast. I've had Ms. Hahn sign things for me several times. She is warm and friendly and chats with signature-seekers, especially children.
I admire your daughter's can-do attitude about auditions. Evidently her cast can slow her down but not stop her.
Yes. Enjoy the experience with Hilary. From everything I've heard in seeing interviews and her online journals, she doesn't like it when someone just puts a CD in front of her and doesn't want to talk. Make sure your daughter remembers the experience!
If Sarah Chang is ever playing at a concert you can attend, GO. She is the nicest person in the world!
Hilary Hahn is really nice about signing programs, cds and whatnot, and is very sweet to kids. Why not comment on her youtube channel, which she reads herself and let her know in advance that you are coming. I'm so sorry about your daughter's arm! My daughter broke her arm once and it was a hard time for her, waiting 6 weeks to heal.
Aww, your poor daughter. Getting Hilary to sign the cast certainly would be a major perk. If it happens, be sure and post a pic!
When I mentioned this to her violin teacher yesterday, he said that she played last year on his birthday and she not only signed his Strad magazine but drew a birthday cake as well. He says that she is quite the artist. I, myself, cannot wait for the concert :)

When you mentioned your daughter figuring out how to play spiccato with her cast, it took me back to a concert I saw some years ago featuring a violinist named Adrian Anantawan. He has no right hand and holds the bow with a prosthesis. He was about to start studying at Curtis. Very inspiring young man.
