So, I have found the major downfall of highschool orchestras. At school today, we got the class list for next year (between now and August, some people will drop the class and some will join, but this is a pretty good idea...)

18 violins (this year- 10)
3 violas (5)
4 cellos (2)
5 basses (2)

that seems a little weird... all the sections willl be twice the size (really great!) except the violas which will be half the size (not so great...)

I don't know.. that just seems weird, and I'm just thinking aloud... next year will be interesting...

That's incredible. The high school orchestra I was in had 37 violins, 3 violas (just because lack of interest for the viola, which is a shame!) 16 cellos and 5 bass. Sometimes I think it would have been better for us in a learning aspect to have a smaller orchestra. I do have to admit, it was quite fun though. Creative chaos is a working theory! :) Do you like being in such a small orchestra?

The small size is both good and bad. With the small class, we are amazingly close as friends. Which is really great.

But then, its hard to get a really full sound with that small of a group.

Plus, if / when the get up to 40 or so violins, we get to split into a string orch and a full orch! Currently, we combine with advanced band students for the end of year concert.
