Reese's Pieces

March 29, 2008 at 2:03 AM

Recently, I was going through my music library as I occasionally do, just going through music which at one point or other was a very good friend to me amidst life's ups and downs, some of which I haven't played in awhile. One of the pieces I had initially worked on a number or years ago, probably in the late 80's, and haven't played in quite sometime is the Bach Double Violin Concerto in D Minor. I can remember especially coming to love this music through hearing the second movement being played in the film "Children of a Lesser God." Today I worked through the first violin part to the Concerto and of course, as always, was especially moved by the second movement. What genius and inspiration in Bach we find.

Bob, my experience is similar to yours. The Bach Double has always been one of my favorite pieces, especially the second movement. I've been looking forward to playing it with a student. I finally have a student who is finishing Suzuki Book 4, which contains, as its last piece, the violin 2 part of the first movement of the Bach Double. The violin 1 part is at then of Suzuki Book 5. I went through the score, changing fingering and bowing if I really felt the music that way. It's amazing how much you forget if you haven't played something in a few years. I'm helping my student with her part and starting to play my part. I have the motivation to work hard because I love this music and I'd love to play it with my student. I've dreamed of doing this for a long time.
