Persimpatia, a magic project about four magic violins

May 24, 2013 at 11:22 AM

• What is Persimpatia??

A feature length world music documentary.

• What’s the documentary about??

Ricard Margarit was an unconventional Catalan luthier who challenged and inspired the music world by making violins with a number of extra strings. 4 or 5 strings are played as on a standard violin and the rest vibrate in sympathy, hence the name of the documentary. Only 4 musicians in the world possess one of these special violins made by Ricard. After the sudden death of Ricard, Ernesto embarks on a journey to seek out the remaining 3 owners of these violins with a view to sharing stories and giving meaning to the life of his close friend and mentor. His dream is for the 4 violinists to play together in a one-off concert in Barcelona as a final farewell to Ricard.

• Who are the main characters??

Four singular violinists: L.Subramaniam (India), Paul Giger (Switzerland), Zoltán Lantos (Hungary) and Ernesto Briceño (Venezuela).

Supporting characters like Jaume Bosser (Catalan lute maker), Xavi Turull (mastermind of successful flamenco fusion group Ojos de Brujo), Alexandre Letellier (French violin maker in India) and others are also involved.

• Why is your documentary special??

Because we use music as a vehicle to provide an intimate portrait of four unique characters and at the same time explore universal themes.

• How does the film contribute to society?

Ricard Margarit was a Catalan who challenged convention. In an increasingly homogeneous society, we consider it important to encourage and applaud free-thinking individuals who question the status quo and dare to be different.
