violin kiddos...

November 23, 2005 at 5:31 AM

i've been looking at the master class lessons at violinmasterclass.com. i realize the target audience for this site is probably younger people (i'm 35), but i can't help but look at all these young kids that are a LOT better than i am. it's disheartening, but i'll keep trying. kudos to the young kiddies, you all make us older begginners look bad.

Ow, Barry, don't beat yourself up. I'm an adult beginner too. Give yourself more credit. Those kids probably started when they were and are the creme de la creme with a lot of top-class careful coaching.

Couldn't figure out how to edit my previous entry. Anyway, I don't know how long you've been playing. Those kids probably started Suzuki-style at 2 or something. I don't compare myself to the kids in my ensemble, they've been playing for three years, I've been playing for three months. And I'm a busy adult. It doesn't mean I'm a lousy player, I just operate under different conditions.

Barry, keep playing and don't beat yourself up! The kids posted on their probably have little or no life and as Sakura said, they are the best players that that professor has to offer. The pieces and sections that those kids play on there too are focused on those kids strengths and in most cases there isn't an entire piece, so those kids can have spent a good deal of time practicing those tiny sections for that website.

I love teaching adult beginners and it's incrediably rewarding andexciting for me as a teacher to work with them and see them progress. Keep it up!

Kelsey, I'm glad you enjoy your adult students. A lot of teachers don't take us seriously, seeing us merely as money-making opportunities on their way to pro status because "we're too old anyway".
