Hello everyone, I arrived at Luther today. I haven't done a thing with the violin today, but I will hopefully be able to practice tomorrow a bit, I have my orchestra audition next wed or thrus (hm, which day to sign up for, suggestions welcome).
Ok this completely contradicts the whole reason you've gone to Luther but don't even think of doing anything with the violin until you've settled, made friends and been to some parties. The violin won't go away, you must integrate a little in the first few days or it'll just seem a lot harder. You're not the only one who's homesick, with a couple of weeks you won't want to go home anymore, you'll enjoy your new life away from home. So talk to people, lots of people will be too scared to initiate conversation, so you have to do it for them. You'll appear more confident and appealing as a friendly face. The people you meet at university last your whole life, even if they don't you'll never forget them. So go to a party, down some booze and relax, it's the best thing you've ever done! I'm going into my final year of BMus (hons) in Edinburgh, Scotland and believe me, leaving home to come here has been the best thing I've ever done. Hope it all goes well matey, take care.

Interesting advice, I will take most of it to heart, except the drinking part because I hate the taste of pretty much every alchoholic berverage I have ever tried.
Nobody likes alcohol when they start drinking, it's an aquired taste and sometimes being drunk is good fun. Anyway, I think a few people on this site would rap my knuckles for that advice! I felt bad after I wrote all that stuff because I think I came across as a bit "Scottish", anyway, enjoy yourself, it's what university is all about, especially attending as a music student, best thing I've ever done. Well done matey! Jonathan
