Salut d'Amour

February 15, 2010 at 11:33 PM ·

Happy Valentines!

So why not compile love-related pieces such as Salut d'Amour? Any instrument!

For Salut d'Amour, I actually prefer the cello version, especially this one by Jian Wang:

Fur Elise by Beethoven is suppose to be a love piece... I don't know the exact story

I just finished playing a Valentine's day concert ( Violin Romances) the other day at An Die Musik in Baltimore.  Perhaps some of these pieces would fit  what you are looking for:

The program was:

  Elgar's  Salut D'Amour

   Beethoven Romance in F major

Dvorak Romance in F minor  ( but it ends in F major)

Romance from "The Gadfly" ( film music also used as the theme to Reilly: Ace of Spies) by    Shostakovich

Tchaikovsky's Melodie ( Op. 42, No. 3) from "Souvenirs of a Beloved Place"

   Kreisler's LIebesfreud and Liebeslied  ( Love's Joy & Love's Sorrow)

Chanson Arabe  ( arr. Kreisler) based on  "The Young Prince and Princess" from        Rimsky -Korsakov's  Scheherezade

   Sarasate's Romanza Andaluza

Mascagni's Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana  ( not strictly a romance but it has such a winning melody that is appropriate to the mood)

Deodat de Severac's  "Valse romantique" from his collection of piano pieces entitled "En Vancances"   ( I recommend the  Aldo Ciccolini album that includes this music)

Zez Confrey's Romanza from "Three Little Oddities" for Piano ( better known as the composer of the ragtime novelty "Kitten on the Keys"

Bernstein's "One Hand One Heart" from West Side story

and as an encore: Johan Svendsen's  Romance  ( there is a beautiful refined performance with Artur Grumiaux available on CD)

If you like romantic pieces, I strongly recommend a Vox CD Romances for violin and piano by Aaron Rosand. Just marvellous.Svendsen, Sinding,Bruch, Clara Schumann and others. A must for violin fans. Aaron was on top form.

This song is quite romantic and beautiful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gleV-Dg6ehY

It's from a movie called Jeux Interdits (Forbidden Games). I'd love to find the sheet music for it, but am having difficulty.

A most unusual romance: Prokofiev, Love for three oranges.
