Peg Dope Alternatives???

July 14, 2009 at 03:17 PM ·

David Burgess mentioned in Smiley's thread that peg compounds that are in a liquid state, thin or thick, can seep into the wood.  A luthier may have to cut away some wood which if being the eye holes for pegs.......... well I think that speaks in its' own behalf.

So what are the alternatives to peg dope?

Well, I use the "old" way: if it is too sticky apply some soap, if too loose some chalk powder.

Perhaps David Burgess can clarify, but I interpreted his comment as applying to peg drops, not peg dope (the lipstick type).  I just used some peg dope a couple of days ago (and I didn't put it on my lips) so I hope it is OK.  I certainly wouldn't want to do anything to jeopardize my violin.

By the way Royce, what's with the clown picture?  I thought you were the Frito Bandito.

David can certainly speak for himself, but he was responding to my question about liquid peg drops, not the stick (paste) form, which he implied does not present the same problem as the liquids.

Smiley- the clown is Rigoleto.  And at times I feel like that character.  I still like the Fritto Bandito, I'll put him back up when I get into a corn phase again!
