Has Yankelevich's book been translated to English?

February 23, 2009 at 05:01 PM ·

Hello,

I am wondering whether Yuri Yankelevich's book "Pedagogicheskoe nasledie" has been translated to English? The words in the title are literally translated as pedagogic/pedagogical/educational and heritage/legacy, and I tried to search for combinations of these words but can't find anything. If you've seen this book in English and/or happen to know its ISBN, could you please share the info.

Thank you.

Hello,

I'm actually in the process of translating this book into English.  I will let you know once it becomes available.  Meanwhile, it is available in French as "L'Ecole Russe du Violin."

All best,

- Masha Lankovsky

A fuller citation for the French version:

Yuri Yankelevitch et l'école russe du violon. Fontenay-aux-Roses : Suoni e colori, 1999.

ISBN: 2914133006; 9782914133005

I see you are in Canada.  University of Toronto and University of Montreal libraries hold this edition.  You may be able to borrow through your library.

Alessio, thank you for the link. I found the book, downloaded and printed it. Among other things, it contains a very thorough analysis of (1) posture, and (2) position change. There are no easy fixes ("practice this, and you'll play like Oistrakh in two weeks").

The oscilloscopic studies of position change, based on the manual analysis of oscilloscope traces by Ms. Sakhaltuyeva, Yankelevich' assistant, are an example of that thoroughness. Imagine having to do that by hand: go through pages of scope traces to infer the changing pitch of a violin tone.

I made a comparable trace using Jerry Agin's program Intonia. It took me all of five minutes. Here it is:

Van Drop Box

It's completely simple: everyone can do it. Have fun.

Hi everyone,

While the book is not published just yet, there is an article of mine detailing Yankelevich's pedagogy now out in this month's (February, 2011) issue of Strad magazine.

Cheers,

- Masha

October 26, 2016 at 04:50 PM · It's good. Has a lot of really in-depth stuff about shifting. Thanks Masha! Are you aware of any interesting writings of Abram Yampolsky, and whether there is anything worth translating from him?
