I teach violin only as an aspect of music, which I see as the greater whole. European art music was the starting point for my own study of music, though I now see it as only a tiny part of the whole musical fabric. In recent years I have come to appreciate Celtic fiddle music much more than I used to, and have begun to play instruments other than bowed strings, especially brass. I remember the words of the pianist, Leon Fleischer, who wrote that "every passing year seems to bring me a bit closer to the light".
