Brahms Hungarian Dances

August 30, 2006 at 05:09 AM · For Brahms's Hungarian Dances, what arrangements are published for violin (piano acc.) Are there any solo arr.? Which are well-known & what would you recommend?

August 30, 2006 at 01:59 PM · The only real arrangements for violin and piano are those by Joseph Joachim. Careful though, they're nasty little finger-twisters, and of course you have to make them sound soooo easy, like a real Budapest gypsy....they're great fun though, take a look at them. My favorites are #4 and #11, but they're all really neat. I think there are several editions available.

August 30, 2006 at 02:35 PM · Gingold has a few that are quite effective too.

August 30, 2006 at 02:50 PM · Hubay has arranged them as well...these are much easier than the Joachim arrangemend and are equally as effective.

August 30, 2006 at 03:22 PM · Hubay also wrote a bunch of his own! They are called "Scenes de la Csardas" and they're lots of fun. :) Hard to find the sheet music though.

August 31, 2006 at 04:32 PM · #17 was arranged by Kreisler, I believe. There's a beautiful video recording of Szerying playing it on YouTube

Hubay’s arrangement of #2 is available, but the others are out of print. Stainer & Bell offer authorized photocopies of #1 and #3-10 for UK £36 (plus £12 postage to the USA).

It’s interesting to compare Joachim’s version of #17 with Kreisler’s. You can hear Shumsky ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJmnaCIsL88&feature=related ) play Joachim’s version and Kogan or Szeryng ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYaE5ythxIk ) play Kreisler’s on YouTube. All of Shumsky/Joachim are on YouTube (!) – I think Joachim threw in a lot of gratuitous difficulties in these, especially for someone like me who would just like to read them for fun and not have to practice them for hours!
Everynote.com has several others “Arr. by Kreisler” but the first pages all look identical to Joachim to me.
There are also arrangements of 12 of the dances (I don’t know which 12) by Paul Klengel (available from Sheet Music Plus). I have a CD of Sitkovetsky playing Klengel’s arrangement of #6 and I find it simpler and more straightforward then Joachim - and just as enjoyable!
I think I will go for Klengel – and will keep Kreisler in mind for #17!

The Joachim arranged Hungarian Dances are complete on the CD-ROM "Violin Solos and Duets: The Ultimate Collection".

Kreisler's arrangement of # 17 was also recorded by Heifetz.

Aaron Rosand recorded all of them I believe.
