Well I'm getting back to my violin playing and this time Im determined to learn. Im still looking for a teacher in chicago, but while on the search I was wondering if any of you know the BEST scale book out there, prefer something in the first position.
Laurie I used that book for a brief period with one of my teachers and it was very benificial. I suggest it also. But when you get past that book I suggest Sevcik op.8 Exercises for the change of positions and preparatory scale studies for violin. I am not sure if it is print anymore but I dont use my copy any more. It is great for anyone that has problems with higher positions... it gets up to 12 position +! It helped me a lot
I've always found the Carl Flesch Scale System fantastic to use. It has just about every scalic pattern you could possibly think of, all set and planned out for daily study. It's massive as well!!!
What's the preferred edition for the Flesch Scale System ?
I use the edition by Max Rostal. It's based on the original having been revised and enlarged. Rostal's intro is very useful and interesting.
Rich
The Sevcik is a carl flesch.. it is great. But it is def. not a begginners book...
Greetings,
ingeneral it is preferable to work through Hrimaly before doing the flesch which I am now seieng given way to early in many cases,
Cheers,
Buri
I think it would be a agood idea to start with Hrimaly and when you get stronger go to Fless.
sorry,Flesch..
the spirit was willing, the Flesh was weak.
Buri, the Flesch was weak.
Laurie, I like the book you recommended, too, but I can't get my students to practice scales. Any suggestions? As a desperate measure, I have them play scales from that book while they're at a lesson. It's an expensive way to practice scales, but whatever works...
Buri - listen to Paul(ine) (s)he wrote it after all :)
>Buri, the Flesch was weak.
Oh, you too....
Making students practice scales?
Perhaps it is a question of specifying exactly what you want a studnet to do?I give my studnets very specific exerciese to do every week and the amount of time they are to spend on it(Kitchen timer). They fill in a chart as they do them. I check the chart at the beginning of every lesson and we tal;k about what they did or didn`t do and the reasons why not or vice versa.
If they persist in not doing what I ask I sack them ;)
Cheers,
Buri

Elementary Scales and Bowings by Harvey S. Whistler and Herman A. Hummel.
