I have to play the Hungarian Dance No. 5 in an orchestra next wk. I was wondering if the staccato is on the sting or off.
Lynn, there is NO staccato! The question is if you should play spiccato, or sautille. If you 'have' a good short spiccato (off the string), it would be the best.
Good luck!
Staccato is also an articulation in music is it not?
Oh okay... I wasnt sure whether to keep the bow on or off the string. My spiccato is really good. Thanks for the help people. Ill rememebr not to keep it too pretty or ugly tommorrow. =P
Marty, Rita was probably clarifying that the term staccato on the violin means on-the-string. And short notes off the string are called spiccato or sautille.
(see thread called "Dot interpretation.)
Yeah, I kinda know that...but staccato is not just a bowing...
fast and short. if it bounces ...so much the beter

January 18, 2005 at 09:01 PM · We just played it, but I can't remember how we did the staccato. However, our conductor kept telling us to play it "pugly", his term for "not to pretty, not to ugly."
Sorry I couldn't be more help...
