Got a promotion of some Daniel Hope stuff, but don“t really know the guy, seems like a quite promising violininst- simply just curious to hear peoples opinion on this young violinist and hear what people think, I read somewhere a person comparing him with Perlman...?
I bet Daniel Hope would rather be compared to Menuhin.
I wouldn't exactly call him "young"...he's around the same age as Shaham and Bell. He's famous over in the UK and is a top soloist there I believe.
Daniel Hope is a finge violinist, but even in the UK there are some stiff competition. Nicola Benedetti, Nigel Kennedy, Tasmine Little, Viktoria Mullova, Jennifer Pike, Cloe Hanslip and all the amazing baroque violinist, Huggett, Podger, Manze or even Standage.
On the topic of 'vs perlman', i happened to be watching his fiocco allegro and in the links was this kid who played it even faster and effortlessly. (Youtube link: watch?v=UDKFxC4O0X8)
Any idea who he is and if he's still playing?
Apparently that video is sped up 2x, that explains it. I did notice the first note was long but I thought he was just adding a little flair. Still a pretty good player.
Mattias, I assume that "finge" is a typo for "fine", rather than for "fringe"? And why the "even"? Well, I suppose there's even less of a personality cult associated with Standage than with any of the others? And his age certainly doesn't fit in with today's pedestalling of youth (younger than Ida Haendel though he is)!
I can't stand age related discussion.....
Though I have my preferences, I would advise against "vs-ing" players of any age and/or era. What works for me is trying to appreciate each artist for who they are and what they bring to music, rather than figuring out who is the "true, foremost violinist in the world". Indeed, I am certain many of these players wouldn't refer to themselves as "better than etc."
I know many dislike Mr. Perlman (will always remember some young, apparently Juilliard students mocking him among themselves while browsing for a recording, many years ago at the old Juilliard bookstore location), but he is a great artist, and very, very influential.
I personally love some violinists that deserve better recognition (particularly in the US, which seems to have a very limited market), as they are truly amazing and inspiring artists-but it's petty to belittle other musicians' art just because they have been long respected in "the music industry" vs your favorites. Listen and learn from them all, I'd say.
