I'm trying to find the sheet music for Shostakovich's Romance from the Gadfly, preferably including piano accompaniment.
I'd prefer to play the original, i.e., as it is with orchestra. However, the editions available for purchase look like they've been transposed into different keys at the least, and I don't know what other changes have been made.
Does anyone know what editions (if any) have the original violin part, or if none do, which edition is best?
Thanks.
Thanks! All the works are still under copyright. You have an edition in C major, and one that's significantly shortened from the whole thing, I think.
I think you would have to see the movie to be sure of the original length. Do you know the key of the original? At least mine is in Russian so it might be closer to the original than you might think.
I'm pretty sure the original is in C major - I had a copy that one of my old teachers (who studied with David Oistrakh) brought from Moscow with him which I lost, that I remember being in C major. It's not a long piece - the violin part was just one page long.
The orchestral parts are most likely only available to rent, not to buy.
The version that Nicola Benedetti plays on her Silver Violin recording is in Ab. The version that Jonathan Carney plays on an orchestral recording of the suite is in Db.
The Sikorski edition is in C. There's an English edition in D.
I reckon that the Nicola Benedetti is tasteless and overdone. Swells and blauck. Find a better version. I heard one on the radio, just a bloke who was the concert master for ?LSO or something. It was very nice. I'll ask my teacher what version she used, but it was done with orchestra. She may have had other versions to compare with.
I'm guessing you heard Jonathan Carney's recording (which is also on YouTube). These days he's the concertmaster of the Baltimore SO, but he recorded it with the RPO.
I think it's in the Shostakovich: Albumstucke for Violin & Piano (EP4794), published by Edition Peters.
Yes, she played the D flat version. Quick run through of it in C and Db, sound much nicer in Db.
Googles gives the sheet music available for free download in Russian, but in C, with piano company.
The Edition Peters lists a Romance in D, and a Romance in C. No preview that I can find anywhere, so not sure what this is.
The score, available in the DSCH edition, has the work in Db.
It was very popular in Soviet Union thirty years ago, often being played on radiobroadcasts by very famous "Bolshoi Theatre Violinists" ensemble, and its canonical version for violin is in C.
there is also a watered down version that is just the melodies VS a better sounding one that has double stop variations. But it's pretty easy, and can be very effective. Sorry I don't know the edition names or anything...

Its the piano+violin copy and in Russian, so possibly the original? But easy to read off. You're welcome to a copy...
