Best Orchestral Viola Mutes?

July 7, 2012 at 07:07 PM · The mute that I currently use for orchestra (a Tourte-style) vibrates annoyingly whenever I play on my C string, even when I'm not even playing loudly or playing pizzicato. I take it off whenever possible, but for pieces that require speedy mute application/removal, this doesn't work very well.

I'll be playing in a much higher-level orchestra in college next year, so I need a better mute that won't annoy me to use. Any suggestions?

Another mute that might work well for you if you like the Tourte is the Bech magnetic mute.

July 8, 2012 at 05:46 AM · I like the Polly very much; it doesn't vibrate and is very easy to don and doff.

September 7, 2012 at 11:05 AM · I second the Bech magnetic mute . . . it keeps your mute where you need it when it's not on the bridge!

September 7, 2012 at 11:54 AM · Polly is great. Mutes well, doesn't vibrate on or off, stays in place, easy to put on/take off.

September 21, 2013 at 09:01 AM · This violin mute works well on a viola too. I use it for orchestral playing on my viola. Nice sound and easy to use without annoying rattles.

Although it is a little pricey for a mute, I use this one on my 16.5 inch viola and I haven't noticed any rattling! It's really awesome, it doesn't move around at all and is really convenient.
