December 28, 2011 at 05:44 AM · Interlochen is a great summer camp! I went to there two summers ago, and I am applying to go again this next summer. It is so much fun, and you meet friends from all over the world. You also learn a lot!

December 28, 2011 at 05:54 AM · Interlochen, as already mentioned, also Sewannee Music Festival.

I've been to Brevard for two summers and hope to go back (I've been in the college division but I was an RA for the high school division so I know a lot about how that program works too). Its emphasis is on orchestral playing but you will have a private lesson every week and usually play in a chamber group as well (if you are in HS you will also have some music theory/history classes).

I also really enjoyed my summer at Madeline Island Music Camp which was very different and focuses on chamber music. I think this program has changed a lot since I was there but I've heard that it is still very good.

There are also many many others that are very good check out Strad and Strings magazines' websites I think they both publish an online directory for music camps and festivals which could be very helpful.

Also there is a large section on summer camps right here on V.com worth scanning over. We've had a couple of topics on camps for adults (practically >25 or so) recently - but I think you are maybe younger?

December 29, 2011 at 01:18 AM · excuse me. sorry, because i don't have any information, but i want to know about interlochen. Does anyone have any information?

thank you very much

December 29, 2011 at 02:07 AM · Sorry for the lack of information!

I am 17 years old, and an advanced music student.

I am at Grade 9 RCM level.

I have looked through the camps on violinist.com but there are just so many I was hoping others might have specific opinions! As well, suggestions for camps for violists!

December 29, 2011 at 02:09 AM · So far, I have thought about applying to Young Artists Program in Ottawa and Domaine Forget!

December 30, 2011 at 04:12 AM · Idyllwild, in California, has two orchestra festivals, two weeks long each. The Chamberfest is the higher level session. My teacher has taught there for two summers. You might also check out Eastern Music Festival and BUTI (Tanglewood's high school level division in Boston). I've also heard good things about the Morningside Music Bridge in Calgary. I believe it's free tuition. Good luck!

December 30, 2011 at 04:26 AM · If you go on Interlochen's website and go to the summer arts camp, it will give you a bunch of information on it. Interlochen is also great for violists, or any other instrument! You have a private lesson every week, practice time, an elective, chamber orchestra, and orchestra. You also get to do activities every night, goo to lake michigan, go to different concerts, and have dances with the boy division. You become so close with the girls in your cabin. I met two girls that are both from LA. One is a violinist and the other is a violists. I am still close with them and went to visit them this past summer. Six weeks seems like a long time, but it goes by really really fast because you have so much fun and stay so busy.

February 25, 2012 at 08:24 AM · I attended Idyllwild for 2 summers, it was great. I also did Round Top in Texas and Meadowmount in upstate NY. I liked Meadowmount the best for the simple reason that you have 3 hours to practice your solo rep. I felt like I made the most progress that summer, vs other camps that have you practicing orchestra and chamber. That is fun, and really does teach you something, but just what is your goal for the summer, and for the future?

August 2, 2012 at 06:10 PM · Carolyn,

this one is not far from Ottawa:

CAMMAC - Lake MacDonald

I have been 4 times so far and always had a lot of fun. Chamber music weeks are especially good; you will be placed in a group based on your skill level.

Hope to see you there!

Rocky

August 3, 2012 at 01:09 AM · There's a summer music program at the Curtis too. It will be very good, especially if David Yang is involved. He is incredible.

August 3, 2012 at 03:23 AM · Check out this camp, run by Dali Quartet violist Adriana Linares, who is a wonderful player and teacher:

September 16, 2012 at 01:28 AM · Illinois Summer Youth Music at University of Illinois is great. You can either do an orchestral camp or a solo camp studying with Rudolf Haken and Stefan Milenkovich. It's pretty intensive, but not Interlochen intensive- there's free time!
