california visit

November 25, 2011 at 03:31 PM · I am visiting s. Ca for a few days. Today, Friday I am in san Diego and going up to whitter later. Then heading to orange county on Monday. I am wondering if there are any good violin shops I should see while here. There's not much back home in Ok, so hope to be able to see some nice violins while here.

And Robert Cauer VIolins

But actually those are more in the LA area, not Orange County. Anyone know about Orange County or San Diego?

November 25, 2011 at 04:57 PM · Go see Boris of Boris Violins in the marina at Newport Beach.

November 25, 2011 at 08:08 PM · I recommend M & R Weisshaar in Costa Mesa. Michael Weisshaar is the son of Hans Weisshaar (the renowned restorer) who passed away some years back. They are very knowledgeable. His wife Rena makes violins. Check them out. They also have a website http://weisshaarviolins.com/.

November 26, 2011 at 04:19 AM · Weisshaar's in Costa Mesa and Foster's in old town Orange but I'm pretty sure they are both closed Sundays and Mondays. Try visiting the Farmer's market near UCI (Irvine). I have two students that frequently play for tips there on Saturday mornings. It's in the same parking lot with In n' Out Burger. AND, report back to me if they rush through the Bach Double:-). Just one correction...It's Rena Weisshaar who is the daughter of Hans. If I remember correctly, Michael took HER name.

November 26, 2011 at 10:35 AM · Thank you everyone. Funeral will be done by noon today I will go by as many of these as possible. Nice to be out and about here. Yesterday the car broke took it to be repaired by family who own a shop by the time it was done I was late leaving san Diego for whitter told my son to bring ALL our stuff including my violin and stand. I planned to play it at the viewing. Well kids got their suit cases and toys and blankets. My suit case and violin were left in san Diego. So I have to wear the same clothes to the funeral that I worn to the viewing, white skirt and pale blue shirt. Sons dress shirt is also with my clothes. Maybe I will find a WalMart at 6 am. Moms funeral is at 9.

No, Michael is the son of Hans. He and Rena both worked in Hans' shop.

Here is a nice article about Rena:

November 27, 2011 at 04:26 PM · Thanks Jane, lovely article. I really like the idea of the two violins sharing a case so they could get to know each other!
