Alternative to Peg-Paste?

October 2, 2011 at 06:03 PM ·

I have recently bought a new instrument and am finding the pegs quite stiff.

I presume they will loosen up with time, but meanwhile, not having any peg paste I was wondering if lipstick would do the job instead?   After all ,it seems to have the same feel and consistency......

I would, for aesthetic reasons gravitate more towards "Bewitching Brown" or "Autumn Glow" rather than "Pink Passion" or Scarlet Harlot" ;)

Not having experimented with cosmetics very much (at least I won't confess to it), other possible candidates might be mascara, foundation, face powder, rouge, body lotion, hair conditioner,  deodorant, eye liner, and Preparation H.

Your mention of Scarlet Harlot lipstick got me a little hot and bent out of shape, but I have since recovered. Kind of. Well, maybe not, but tomorrow is a new day.

Tthis subject just seems to lend itself to crass humor (and well appreciated by me, I might add!). Liz, it's hysterical that your post came around the same time Anne's did. I say we keep 'em both running and load them up with further crass (and/or helpful, but don't ask me here) comments.

David - your comments cracked me up!

If it crumbles instead of wiping onto the pegs, it's no longer creamy.

...Exactly which of the above substances are you referring to Michael?   :)

What Lyndon said. The old fashioned solution is lava soap and chalk. There's something about lava soap that isn't too slippery so it works better with the chalk.

Just a thought, and it's no more than that, not even a suggestion until there's informed comment from those who really know – could soft pencil lead be used?  That, as we know, is a recommended material for lubricating the slots in the bridge and scroll nut.  I believe soft pencil lead is a mix of graphite and a clay.

I use Hill's for my pegs when they need it.

Michael I have reservations about Lava soap.  As I recall Lava soap has grit in it to cut grease when washing our hands for those of us who used to work on automobile motors and such.  Like using sandpaper in your peg holes?  Would you really want to grind out your peg holes.   Don
