You know when your hands are cold or dry and they don't grip the bow or neck very well? Well I seem to suffer from this quite a bit. Quite often when I try to practice, my hands do not seem to have their natural grip (not because they're cold or dry) and particularly the tip of my little finger becomes too smooth to remain in place on the bow when crossing strings and playing fast passages. moisturiser doesn't seem to work because the problem isn't dry skin, it's simply lack of grip (sweat to be exact). A further problem of moisturiser is that it can make the hands too slippy and rub off onto the violin and bow. Does anyone know of any method/product to remedy this?
PS. Nobody suggest rock-climber's chalk because that's just a silly idea

According to hypochondriac.com you might have leprosy.
:)
in which case out of deference to those on the front row, don`t use too rapid a vibrato.
Thanks guys for your predictions of disease. I feel a lot more optimistic about this now! Didn't actually think about putting anything on the stick instead of my hands so thanks for that Stephen.
For dry clammy hands, run your hands through your hair. I'd rather somebody else did it, but that usually doesn't do me any good.
I have the same problem you have. It is exacerbated by Alaska's cold, dry climate. Bad for the bow hand, excellent for the left hand, especially shifting.
I haven't tried to solve it, though. Something sticky for your pinkie... Ear wax, maybe? :)
Greetings,
you`ve been watching Shrek reruns again.

Er talcum powder? That usually stops stuff from sliding about?
"For dry clammy hands, run your hands through your hair."
That's fine if you're lucky enough to have a full head of hair to run your hands through. Well, I do have hair elsewhere, but I don't think that'd be very becoming to rub my hands there in front of an audience.
depends which club you are playing in.
Do you have calluses? Often I find if my calluses get too thick I get this problem.
Greetings,
I find I get a thick skin from callous people,

September 2, 2008 at 12:00 AM · Greetings,
you might actually consider seeing a specilaist on this one. Completley forgot what but this can be a precursor of illness. On the other hand you might have been put on the earth to boost sales of rock climber chalk.
You might consider having the part of the bow you hold covered in a thin layer of leather. Also protects the stick.
