Good place to look for violins in Texas?

August 10, 2008 at 09:07 PM · I was wondering if anyone knew of a good place to look for violins in Texas, but preferably in the Houston area. I have been playing the same violin for about 10 years now, and I know that I will need to upgrade soon. I am looking for a great sounding modern violin that would cost between $8,000-$15,000.

August 11, 2008 at 07:58 PM · There are some really good local luthiers in austin and fredricksberg. not to far from houston. message me if you would like their info.

August 16, 2008 at 05:08 AM · I know of a great luthier in Allen, TX, which is near Dallas. He interned at Beare's and did a wonderful job with my fiddle. His violins are in your price range...though maybe at the upper end. If you are interested in traveling that far, message me and I'll get you his info. He was kind enough to let me try one of his violins even though I was just there for repairs on mine. He may also ship instruments for you to try...I have heard some luthiers do.

August 16, 2008 at 03:59 PM · Hi, Brian. I assume that since you are in Houston, you've tried the Amati Shop (Rice Village). If not, here is their website.

If you're willing to travel outside the Houston area, I can strongly recommend any of the following:

The Luthier Shop (Steven T. Cundall) in Aubrey (Dallas / Fort Worth area)

Wayne Burak Music in Arlington (D/FW area)

Terra Nova Violins (Joel Becktell & Abbas Selgi) in San Antonio .

I see you're at UH. I studied there with Fredell Lack in the '70s, and I also have a former student, Melissa CantĂș, who's there now. Tell them hello for me!
