Hi!
Does anyone know of any good music for two violins and a cello?
My quartet just lost it's violist and we are having trouble finding another one...
Thanks,
Heather
That's tough. Well, this website does list 300 such pieces -- with the caveat that some of the pieces are for violin, cello and flute (or whatever) and then the second violin plays the part of the flute (or whatever).
For example, you can play Mozart Trio in C major, K.439b.
That should keep you busy for awhile! :)

Mozart's "Five Viennese Serenades" for string trio (two violins & cello). Absolutely wonderful!
www.LastResortMusic.com has several volumes for various trios.
The Last Resort books are great for gigs, esp. weddings, but I don't know you would enjoy playing those pieces for anything else...maybe, who knows?
Mozart wrote a couple of nice movements(2 violins/cello) which I can not find the music for. There's a recording on the Phillips label with the Arthur Grumiaux trio. They are KV266/267 (Adagio and Menuetto).
Thanks for all the responses! We've played some of the London Trios and some of the pieces in the Last Resort music books, we really want more challenging repertoire though...I'll have to get a hold of some of the other stuff you guys mentioned...

Thank Sibley Music Library for that one!
IMC publishes Mozart's Four Trios for Two Violins and Cello (K. 439b and K. 266). You might also want to check out Two Sonatas by Tartini (also IMC) and Three Trios by Boccherini (don't know publisher - can't find mine right now). I've also come across wedding music by Lynne Latham for Violin, Viola and Cello, with optional Violin 2 for Viola. The Vancouver Public Library has a ton of Corelli trios (Zwölf Triosonaten für 2 Violinen und Basso continuo), but I've never been able to find them in a music store. The Corellis seem to work pretty well with two violins and cello, even without the cembalo part.
At Last Resort Music Publishing, Inc., we have 12 volumes of trios that will work perfectly for that combination, plus 3 smaller collections of music, including tangos. The website is www.lastresortmusic.com. If you go there, you can find the listings of all the pieces contained in each volume.

Handel trio sonatas for 2 violins & basso continuo .... although I don't know how interesting the basso continuo part is for the cello.
I like theEmusicquest "Music-In-Print Master Index" lists 333 catagory Trios: 2 Violin, Violoncello.

February 15, 2008 at 11:58 PM · I'm sure an arrangement must exist of the Haydn London Trios for two violins and cello. I don't know where though (sorry)
Good luck
